#Happily Ever After
36” x 42” woodcut on Masa paper
Based on the Grimm Brothers’ Cinderella, this woodcut shifts the focus from Cinderella to her two stepsisters. In the original story, the stepsisters mutilate their feet—one cutting off her heel, the other her toe—in an attempt to fit into Cinderella’s lost slipper. Their deception fails, and after Cinderella marries the prince, they beg for forgiveness. At her wedding, her pigeons peck their eyes out, punishing their cruelty. This piece captures that violent moment, commenting on society's obsession with beauty standards and violence which is constantly documented and shared through social media.
