Joan of Arc

36” x 42” woodcut on Masa paper

A historical and mythical figure, Joan of Arc is the patron saint of France. Claiming divine visions, she led France's army to victory over British occupation. Captured and tried for heresy she was burned at the stake at just nineteen. In this contemporary reimagining, Joan rides a motorcycle instead of a horse, her foot defiantly placed on the front wheel amid flames. She waves a white flag with the fleur-de-lis motif, symbolizing her enduring defiance. Her short haircut and bold pantsuit challenge traditional gender norms, embodying strength, pride, and resistance
