Baba Yaga
36” x 48” woodcut on paper
A complex figure from Slavic folklore, simultaneously feared and revered. In some tales, she is a terrifying, ugly, old witch who devours children, while in others, she acts as a helpful figure guiding the hero(ine). Living deep in the forest in a hut that stands on chicken legs, Baba Yaga's home and her very being are mobile and unpredictable. She is often depicted flying through the air in a wooden mortar, wielding a pestle, embodying both power and mystery.
